Wang Chao Wang Chao studied at the Printmaking Department of the China National Academy of Fine Arts(CNAFA) in 1994, where now he is a lecturer after his graduation. And he is also a researcher in the traditional water-based printing workshop of the CNAFA. He won the Fukuoka Art Museum prize in Japan in 1998. The China National Academy of Fine arts plays a very important role in the traditional water-based prints. The Purple Bamboo Studio (Zizhuzai), the printmaking studio at the China National Academy, is the only surviving studio of traditional woodblock printmaking with water-soluble materials in a Chinese academy. Wang Chao was attracted deeply by the ancient woodblock styles and techniques. And he worked primarily in the studio with the old artisans who had been engaged in the research work on the traditional water-based printmaking for many years. From then on, he has formed a new special style of his own in his artworks, which was different from others. In keeping with the use of traditional imagery and woodblock techniques in his work, Wang Chao is able to handle his creations skillfully. His artworks are full of historical heritage and modern significance. Tranquil style, exquisite depicting.., it seems that they are extempore sketches, but actually, they are containing elegantly simple savors of the ancient scholars. Wang Chao, the young artist, is seeking a new woodblock medium through traditional images. He is a promising artist and he is only at the age of thirty.
